R.Biser Introduction to the Sumerel Therapy System How often have you said this? "WHY is my horse lame?" Or perhaps, "WHERE is my horse lame?" How about, "He is not moving/performing like he should. What’s WRONG with my horse?" These comments express the frustration of horse owners everywhere, when dealing with PHYSICAL PROBLEMS in their horses. The movement of the horse is the primary aspect of all disciplines, competition and general horse activities! When there is a problem in the horse’s body, that movement is compromised. The amount of time, money and frustration spent trying to address the comments above is astounding. But now there IS a way for you, the horse owner, to be able to find (specifically) and then help correct (safely and effectively) most of the physical problems hindering your horses. It is called the Sumerel Therapy System. This simple, 2 part concept has been in use worldwide for over 17 years and now you can learn what it can do for you and your horses! Part 1: Finding the Problems The Sumerel Therapy System begins with the use of a SCANNER to go over the entire horse to pinpoint everywhere there is anything physically wrong in the horse today. This simple, user friendly device weighs about 3 ½ pounds and is worn on a belt around the waist. Powered by commercial grade rechargeable batteries, the device uses the same physiology that our body uses to tell us when we hurt something. If you bumped your elbow and said "Ouch", several things happen to provide that ‘signal’ to you. Whenever living tissue is injured, or damaged there is an immediate drop in electrical resistance at the injury site. That drop in resistance allows the pain impulse to jump the synapse of the nerves and send a signal to your brain which is how you feel pain. The Scanner emits a micro current which cannot be felt by either the horse or the operator. This current is used to measure the resistance in the tissue and when low resistance is found (indicating a problem there), the Scanner emits a ‘beep’. A minor problem produces a weak ‘beep’ and a severe abnormality produces a much stronger tone. The Scanner does not label or diagnose any problems, but simply defines exactly where problems exist! One major advantage of using he Scanner is the lack of interpretation required of the operator. All horse people have experienced the frustration of having 3-4 people watching a lame horse trot out and hearing the ongoing argument over where the problem is! Although this is very common in the horse world, it provides 2 major problems for the horse owner. First, the reason the observers are suggesting different problems, is that each is interpreting what they are seeing. Due to the way horses compensate (alter their natural pattern of movement) to protect painful areas, it is not easy to define by simple observation all the problems that are present. I have met a few people who are very good at this, but for most people it is little more than a good guess. Three different people may be suggesting 3 different problems from watching the same horse, and the irony is that all three may be correct! They could each be seeing a valid issue for that horse today. However that brings us to the second major problem in this scenario; people are always looking for the problem. Having scanned over 5,000 horses with this technology, personally, I can tell you I have never found a horse with only one problem! People often find a problem and thinking it is the problem, stop any further evaluation. The fact is we need to be evaluating the WHOLE HORSE! The scenario above usually ends up treating the most obvious problem, while the other problems go undetected, hence untreated. That obvious problem is often the result of several other problems in other areas of the horse’s body! Since the problem being treated was caused by the other untreated problems, the treated problem will almost certainly return. This will evolve into the all-to-common, chronic problem, which ended (unnecessarily) the careers of many good horses. The expense and frustration horse owners experience from these situations are incredible, and can be avoided by using the Sumerel Therapy System Scanner. By scanning the whole horse and treating everything that is a problem for the horse today, the improvement is often amazing, both in immediacy and quantity. Part 2: Treating the Problems As the whole horse is scanned (which takes about 30 minutes) each problem area indicated by the Scanner, is marked with a water crayon. Treatment is provided by the application of pulsed red and infrared light, produced by medical grade LED’s. (light emitting diodes) to each area marked. This light therapy does not rely on heat as many people believe, but rather the actual absorption of light energy into the tissue at the cellular level. Light therapy was first produced by lasers, but the high peak power of the laser created certain risks such as burning the retina if used around the eyes, sub-dermal burning, and several other contraindications. The high peak power of the laser as well as its extremely short duty cycle (the actual time the light is on) also limited its therapeutic benefit. The LED on the other hand has a lower peak power but drastically longer duty cycle, making it far more effective therapeutically and eliminating all the contraindications of the lasers! Over the past decades there have been many clinical studies done on the efficacy of therapeutic LEDs, and all the results continue to be positive, if not amazing. Even NASA became involved with LED therapy and has been using it for decades. In my 17 years of experience using LED therapy I have seen incredible benefits with never a problem.
